More than a few people who follow the sport of boxing in the U.S. know the sport has seen a decline in popularity since its last big tournament.
The last major tournament, the 2016 Golden Gloves, was attended by only two people, a heavyweight champion and a lightweight champion.
And since the last tournament in 2010, boxing has been held mostly in smaller venues in the Northeast.
But some fans of boxing have made the switch to specialty sports like cycling, swimming, and skiing.
“I think it’s a good time to switch, because we’re all so used to the same basic boxers and the same sport,” said James Smith, the owner of the gym at the top of a hill near his home in Portland, Ore.
“It’s very much like the NBA.
You’re not going to find a lot of crossover players.”
