People who are looking for a way to get more information about their eye conditions may want to look elsewhere for answers.
In fact, one of the biggest questions people have about the eyes they have is how they feel.
But as many people discover after being diagnosed with eye conditions, there is a wealth of information out there that might help.
We asked experts to share some of the best eye care tips to make sure you have the best possible experience.
The answer may surprise you.
1.
Don’t wear makeup When it comes to looking healthy, it’s best to stick to your usual makeup and avoid using lipsticks, eye shadows, or high-shine cosmetics, says Dr. Mary-Ann Degenhardt, an eye doctor at the Mayo Clinic.
Even though makeup can help protect your eyes from infection, the results may not be that amazing.
A good rule of thumb is to wear a simple, loose-fitting eye makeup that covers your entire face and not just your eyes.
“If you wear a high-tech lipstick that is actually tinted, that can create a false color effect,” says Dr Degenhart.
This can also be a problem when you wear glasses.
If you want to make yourself look like you’re not wearing makeup, you can wear the right eye makeup every day and not have to wear makeup for an hour or two each day.
Also, avoid wearing makeup that is too thick, which can cause the color to get washed off the skin.
2.
Don’s eyes are so sensitive Dr. Degenhard recommends wearing a mask when you go to the bathroom to protect your skin from irritation caused by the makeup.
A mask also helps to keep your eyes dry and helps keep your skin moisturized.
3.
Be careful about getting out of bed Dr. Marni Paltrow, an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Minnesota and an expert in eyelid disorders, explains that getting up from your chair can actually make you more sensitive to ultraviolet light.
“I see people who have eyelid issues that may not have an eye condition,” says Paltrows, who is also an eye care consultant.
“They may be using the eyelid masks, but they’re actually wearing them because they are uncomfortable.”
A mask can also prevent eye irritation and the possibility of developing eye infections.
“Even though a mask will help reduce your irritation, it can also create more damage to the eye.
This is why you should wear a mask whenever you go outside,” says Degenbach.
Also consider a face mask.
4.
Use a mask in a room with plenty of light If you’re in a high pressure environment with plenty at your fingertips, a face shield can help prevent eye problems in the event that you need to take a step outside for a moment.
“A face mask can really protect your eye when you need it,” says Marnijusz Papanikolaou, a dermatologist at the Institute of Dermatology in Poland.
“And it can be a great alternative to a mask.”
The best way to protect yourself is to have a full face mask, which should be a thick, loose fitting one with a flap to hold your face.
“When I wear a face helmet, it is a full mask with a small flap,” says Rui Zuker, a professor of medicine at the School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore.
“You put a face hood on your face, but it can only protect the top of your nose.
A face mask is also not protective because it doesn’t go around your eyes.”
5.
Get a clear lens for reading If you are an avid reader, then you’ll want to wear glasses, and a good lens is a simple and low-glare one that covers the entire lens.
“There is some research showing that glasses can help people who are blind read,” says Zukerr.
“In some studies, glasses were effective at reading people with low vision.”
But when it comes down to choosing your glasses, consider the quality and the color.
If the lenses are not of the right color or have a clear edge, they may be not suitable for you.
For example, if you wear sunglasses and they are too dark, you may not need them, says Papanika.
Another concern is that a lens that is dark and blurry can make reading difficult.
It’s also important to check the lenses that you use for your eye condition.
“The best lenses are the ones that you can control the glare and the clarity of,” says David Degen, an optometrist at the Eye Institute in Rochester, New York.
You should also look at lenses made specifically for people with different eye conditions.
“For people with normal vision, there are certain things that we don’t want to see,” says Sridhar Prasad, an ophthalmologist and a co-founder of The Vision Center in London.
